In traditional “open” surgery the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm incisions. Each incision is called a “port.” At each port a tubular instrument known as a trochar is inserted.
Open surgery provides direct access and better visibility but comes with a larger incision and longer recovery. Laparoscopy, on the other hand, offers smaller incisions, faster recovery, and less noticeable scars, but may not be suitable for all cases.”
A laparoscopy is often done when the results of a physical exam, X-ray, or CT scan are not clear. Laparoscopy may be used to determine a stage of cancer for an abdominal organ. It may also be used to check an abdominal injury. It can see where the injury is and how deep it is.
